We're obsessed with small business and social justice in our own gifting traditions. Since did a BUNCH of sleuthing, we thought we'd share our results with you in the form of three holiday gift guides. Within this guide you'll find items made from colorful recycled skateboards, self-care treats from BIPOC-owned businesses, and of course the best in delicious and ethically-crafted beverages.
228 Grant Street Candle Co. creates affordable and quality products. With sensuous blends from Meyer Lemon and Lavender, to Sea Salt and Orchid, 228 Grant Street has a beautiful collection. Inspired by family tradition and Black owned, they also give back by offering a Benefit Candle of the Month.
2. For Bitter For Worse Gift Pack
This sweet gift trio is plastic-free and fully recyclable. Are drinks are free from preservatives, artificial and “natural” flavors. Social responsibility and building an inclusive table is the foundation of our company. The Gift Trio includes all three FBFW varietals and is the perfect gift for the sober-curious person in your life (or a treat for yourself).
4. Face Mask
DIOP is a clothing (and now mask) company that boldly engages with cultural appropriation vs appreciation through clothing and conversation. They explain the purpose and community of DIOP but dedicate extensive space to opening dialogue about appropriation through clothing, which we think is so clever, since fashion can often be an unwitting or unexamined perpetrator of cultural appropriation.
5. Baggu Bag
For the eco-conscious bling-lover on your list: fun and metallic reusable bags! The bags are designed to minimize fabric waste and use recycled nylon. Recycled canvas and vegan leather options are also available.
This scrub is made with a short list of ingredients that you can identify and pronounce, and comes in an entirely reusable or recyclable container! Gussy it up a bit and build a custom self-care gift box by pairing it with Primo chocolate and a 228 Grant Street candle.
The company is committed to fair work practices and deals directly with farmers. Their mission statement says it all: ”We [Primo Chocolate] are committed to aiding in BIPOC land ownership, rematriation and ecological regeneration through crafting mind-melting delicious chocolate.” Their packaging is beautiful–tie a few bars up in a cute ribbon for an affordable luxury gift for a pal!
8. Dela Scents
Made with essential oils, cruelty free, and natural ingredients sourced from within the U.S and primarily the PNW, Dela Botanicals have a beautiful array of scents. Founded by a pair of Portland sisters, Dela is a lovely gift for anyone who appreciates the finer things and likes to smell nice!
