8 Ethical and Sustainable Gifts for a Host

We're obsessed with small business and social justice in our own gifting traditions. Since we did a BUNCH of sleuthing, we thought we'd share our results with you in the form of three holiday gift guides. Within this guide you'll find items made from colorful recycled skateboards, self-care treats from BIPOC-owned businesses, and of course the best in delicious and ethically-crafted beverages.

1. For Bitter For Worse

The Saskatoon is the perfect teetotal companion to red wine on a festive table. With tart berry flavors and tannins from Douglas fir tips, The Saskatoon pairs well with savory foods and is ideal for building an inclusive holiday table.

2. Pukka Tea Gift Box

Pukka Tea (B Corp with a score of 104.1) is Climate Neutral Certified, and Fair Trade.  This beautiful award-winning gift box uses paper that is recycled and FSC certified – it’s even glued together with specially selected vegetable based glues. They also partner with Soul Fire Farm, an Afro-Indigenous centered community farm in Petersburg, New York, committed to uprooting racism and injustice in the food system. We use Pukka Three Cinnamon Tea with Smoky No. 56 in our Cinnamon Toddy Recipe and it’s delicious!

3. Beeswax wrapping

A company committed to changing the food storage game, they produce reusable beeswax storage bags and wraps in an appealing range of colors and wide variety of sizes and types. Bee’s Wrap is a B Corp with a new vegan line, perfect for your host’s kitchen!

4. Primo Chocolate Sampler

Primo Chocolate Sampler Pack is perfect for your friend who loves to curate an experience. The company is committed to fair work practices and deals directly with farmers. We fell hard for them (even before tasting their chocolate) as soon as we read their mission: "We [Primo Chocolate] are committed to aiding in BIPOC land ownership, rematriation and ecological regeneration through crafting mind-melting delicious chocolate.” Plus, their packaging is beautiful—what a delightful gift!

5. Sea Salt and Rose Bath Soak

Want to gift your host a relaxing evening? Pair this bath soak with a few Primo chocolate bars, FBFW Saskatoon, or a 228 Grant Street candle. This Deep Detox bath soak blends Himalayan salt, Dead Sea salt, rose petals, eucalyptus, and lavender essential oils. Goodnight Darling Co. is also driven by the mission to de-romanticize sleep deprivation.

6. Quality Candle.

228 Grant Street Candle Co. creates affordable and quality products. With sensual blends like Meyer Lemon and Lavender, to Sea Salt and Orchid, 228 Grant Street has a beautiful collection. Inspired by family tradition and Black owned, they also offer a Benefit Candle of the Month.

7. Recycled skateboard bottle opener

Charm your host with this sweet opener and a bottle of Saskatoon. Our preferred bottle opener, made from stainless steel and the industrial waste of skateboard manufacturing, the Maple XO is styley and sustainable (and the company is woman-owned)!

8. A Bifties Box

Perhaps you need to send a belated thank you gift to an excellent host—a Bifties Box is perfect! Cute and quality luxury items, Bifties is a gift box service that includes all Black owned brands. Putting your money where your mouth is can be fun and flirty!
